Last Wednesday, January 25th was the day of the Andy Roberts featured evening at Haverfolk, formerly known as Havering Folk Club. Why did they change the name? I don’t really get it, you’d have to ask Simon or Peter. Anyway, after a recent period of not playing guitar so much really, I managed to get in just about the right amount of rehearsal time in the days before and decided to go ahead with the plan of  doing three new songs and basing the rest of the entire setlist on my own material, much as I had done so for the guest night at Romford Folk Club, nearly a year earlier. The full set list for the night as actually played is viewable with links to each of the songs on my own wiki, here at :  January 2012 setlist   and any upcoming gigs are on the Main page, such as the one at Loughton on Thursday April 19th, 2012. Setting off for the venue was a bit traumatic, as an electrical fault had caused a series of cancellations on the main from Liverpool Street Station to Romford, so we went to see what the buses were looking like, just missed one, and saw that the traffic on the main road was choc a block. So we went back to the station and waited for the next train due, which should have been a half hour wait under the abnormal circumstances but then that one was cancelled too. There was nothing for it but to lug the two guitar cases and ourselves onto a busy number 86 bus and just sit it out as we chugged our way up along the occupied bus lanes and through the congested area around Ilford. We would arrive late for the start of the evening perhaps, but not late for my own appearance due around 9 O’clock which in the event we turned up well in time for. So that’s the transport news, then. A bit of a preoccupation with people who live in the London area I’m afraid. The gig itself went well, I thought, I was reasonably happy with the performances and the guitars stayed mostly in tune. The turn out was good, and people said they enjoyed the music, so that’s a big result, and one of the best things is that Linda’s front row video recording managed to capture the full setlist with no problems, so we have a decent audio and visual of all 21 original tunes. There’s a possibility of bringing that out as a DVD which will become the latest release from me to replace the few copies of the “Sampler” EP I’ve been carrying around for almost three years now! I think I ‘ll be turning the soundtrack into three episodes for the podcast series, and uploading a few songs to youTube as well, but the first one I’ve got processed is the finale song where I managed to get two violinists up on stage with me, namely John Foxen and Richie Barratt with Pep on Banjo and I think you can just hear Bernie on concertina and Mickie Brown on harmonica as well. Here’s Cajun Music Cajun Food live at Haverfolk

Episode 28 – From Andy Roberts Music on YouTube Most Viewed http://andyrobertsblog.co.uk/items/view/2819/episode-28-from-andy-roberts-music-on-youtube-most-viewed

For this week’s podcast because there couldn’t be a live show, so  I’ve done something a bit different. Instead of recording the show and then maybe ending up with some songs for youTube, I’m making the podcast out of videos that I have already on there. It’s the best of my youTube channel from 2010, my pick of five from the most popular songs on there, strung together with a little bit of introduction. Links, play, download

Subscribe to the podcast RSS or get it from iTunes Download MP3 to save – 28.0 Mb in size, playtime 29 minutes 06 seconds :- 28 Andy Roberts Podcast Episode 28.mp3 Episode 28 Shownotes

Mondura Dam – “As long as we have Water….” http://andyrobertsblog.co.uk/items/view/2633/mondura-dam-as-long-as-we-have-water

Mondura Dam is a song by Andy Roberts and a place in Queensland Australia, also known as Lake Monduran. Australians seem to use the word “dam” to mean the whole body of water and surrounding environment, not just the engineering contruction that is the retaining wall, as other English speakers may have it. Written at the location, the idea for the song originated from the rhythm of walking back down to the camp carrying a container full of water. The lyrics simply describe the notable characteristics of the nature reserve, and pose a simple question about the need for drinking water and how this balances against other concerns. Mondura Dam Lyrics When you dam a river, the valley forms a lake The trees stand out like boat masts, how much water does it take to feed a small town? If you feed the magpies, they won’t leave you alone Let’s go find some firewood, tonight we’ll be alone under the starshine Mondura Dam, that’s where I am, with my fire and my pan I’m up on Mondura Dam Pelicans are fishing, cruising up and down When you stock a lake with fish then all the birds will come around It’s easy living As long as we have water, there’s no need to move on and when we’ve finished cooking, we’ll throw all the firewood on and watch it flare up When you dam a river, the valley forms a lake you may lose some woodland , but the natural park it makes is free for everyone Mondura Dam on the podcasts I’ve played Mondura Dam once on Podcast episode 11, and also opened Episode 2 with the song. Monduran Dam Videos I don’t know which is the best video to illustrate Mondura Dam really, but this seems to be the only public live performance that’s made it to youTube, from July 2009 at Havering Folk Club.

In 2009 I added over 100 videos to the Andy Roberts Music youTube account, in fact the number is 108. These are the six which are currently leading the table of most views, although it should be noted that each video was uploaded at different times during the year.

Andy Roberts Webcasts http://andyrobertsblog.co.uk/items/view/1742/andy-roberts-webcasts

Andy Roberts Tuesday Webcasts Andy Roberts does a weekly music webcast on a Tuesday Evening at 7.00pm UK time, every week. The idea behind this is to build up a regular discipline of performance, with a sense of audience including online interactions, to have fun, to rehearse songs which may be performed at Havering Folk Club on a Wednesday or elsewhere, and to document examples from the repertoire for the Andy Roberts Music youTube channel. OK, so if you want to listen in and maybe join the live real time conversation on a Tuesday evening then all you have to do is get yourself over to ustream.tv and the Andy Roberts Music channel You don’t have to log in just to listen, but if you do then you can join in the banter, be seen, and even make requests which stand a good chance of being granted.

Tuesday 29th September Andy Roberts Show There should be a written report appearing here on the AndyRoberts.ME  blog within a few days of each show, which might include embedded video from either the YouTube Channle or the Ustream saved videos, whichever is most appropriate at the time. So  for example, on Tuesday 29th September we had a fun time with a session that lasted overall for nearly an hour including two new songs for the webcast, one of which was only recenty written by Andy Roberts, and the premier also of a new instrument the Saz. Here are some of the highlights from the Andy Roberts webcast show earlier this evening then: Home – Andy Roberts plays Roy Harper There’s usually a Roy Harper song each week and this week it was “Home”, which is perhapas not one of Roy’s best ever compositions but it’s kind of funky to rock to sometimes. This take didn’t make it to youTube.
Motel Blues – Andy Roberts plays Loudon Wainwright Motel Blues was one of Loudon Wainwright’s most popular songs at the time of Album 2 and it was one of the first performed live by Andy Roberts outside of the New Folk Cottage in Truro. It hasn’t seen the light of day at Havering Folk Club yet for some reason, but has featured in the Tuesday webcast before now.

Deep River Blues Another first, in which Andy Roberts has a go at playing the delta blues classic “Deep River Blues” learned by ear from having heard Wizz Jones sing it somewhere. Check out some of teh other versions of this song on YouTube, especially Leo Kotke and Doc Watson.

Andy Roberts Plays The SAZ At last, after months of messing about Andy finally gets his Turkish SAZ back in tune and plays some of the improvised tunes developed for the instrument. The Saz has seven strings arranged into three groups.

New Andy Roberts Song : The Rowan Tree Here it is, the new song by Andy Roberts which is called “The Rowan Tree” and tells the tale of four witches.
